IN 1996 an American writer, Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, published a book based on his doctoral dissertation at Harvard University. It created quite a commotion among the public and was hotly debated by historians.
The book, Hitler’s Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust, argues that the vast majority of ordinary Germans were in fact “willing executioners” in the Holocaust, not just Nazi party members or SS troops.
