HERE’S a sentiment I hear often: Why do you bother with things happening so far away? Aren’t there enough issues here in our country already to be concerned about?

These questions usually get lobbed at me in less polite or grammatical words but that’s the expressed implication, that we should not worry about things happening in foreign lands but simply concentrate on those within our borders instead.
