EACH generation must consider the legacy it leaves behind. “Our Country, Our Future” is a call to action, reminding us that our values, policies, and unity today shape tomorrow. In a complex world, I believe we must pursue inclusivity, sustainable growth, and shared responsibility, rejecting divisive narratives that weaken our society

Unity

In a diverse country like Malaysia, we cannot afford divisive rhetoric that pits communities against each other. Such narratives breed mistrust, hinder progress, and threaten stability. Our future relies on rejecting division and fostering inclusivity and respect.

We have seen how the politicisation of religion can create deep rifts in society. For example, in the Middle East and other Muslim-majority countries, the political use of Islam has often led to disunity among Muslims, fostering sectarianism, factionalism, and, in some cases, oppression by Muslims against fellow Muslims. This divisive use of religion has torn communities apart, and we must take heed of these lessons.

Our strength lies in shared values like compassion, justice, and respect. Leaders should promote a national identity that embraces diversity and rejects sectarianism, ensuring every citizen feels they have a stake in our common future.

Prudent economic policies

For a country to thrive, fiscal responsibility is crucial. The government must avoid expanding the budget for short-term political gains, which can lead to heavy debt passed down to future generations.

Spending should focus on lasting benefits like infrastructure, education, healthcare, and technology, driving sustainable growth for all. Fiscal prudence also requires reducing waste, curbing corruption, and ensuring taxpayer money is used responsibly. By avoiding unnecessary debt and spending wisely, we secure both our current economic health and the future prosperity of generations to come.

Value-based education

Education is the gateway to a brighter future. Our nation’s educational system must be one that prepares our youth not only academically but also instils values like critical thinking, compassion, and responsibility. In an age of rapid technological advancement, a forward-thinking education system should incorporate digital literacy, creative problem-solving, and adaptability, alongside traditional knowledge.

However, the benefits of education must be accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic background. Our future depends on creating equal opportunities in education so that every individual can contribute meaningfully to society. An inclusive education system that promotes not only academic skills but also social and emotional development will help raise future citizens who are well-rounded, resilient, and socially responsible.

Holistic development

Our country’s future depends on an economy that benefits everyone, not just a few. Inclusive growth is key to reducing inequality, improving living standards, and fostering shared prosperity. Economic policies must create opportunities for all, leaving no one behind.

Investing in sustainable sectors like green energy, technology, and local businesses will build a resilient economy ready to face global challenges. While prioritising environmental sustainability, growth shouldn’t compromise overall economic development – we must strike a balance to ensure progress in all areas.

By promoting entrepreneurship and skill-building, we empower people to innovate and adapt, essential traits in an interconnected world. A future rooted in economic strength and environmental responsibility is one we can all look forward to.”

Good governance and rule of law

A prosperous and stable society requires good governance rooted in justice, transparency, and accountability. Citizens must have faith in the rule of law and trust that their leaders act in the nation’s best interests. When leaders prioritise justice and uphold democratic values, society as a whole flourish.

Justice must encompass all aspects of society, including freedom of speech, fundamental rights, and the protection of civil liberties. Laws should not be exploited for political or personal gain, especially in matters of religion or culture. Drawing lessons from nations where politicising religion has caused division, we must prioritise policies that benefit the public over factional interests. Leaders must act responsibly, even against populist pressures, ensuring governance remains fair and inclusive for the future.

Participatory and responsible citizens

More than two decades ago, I introduced the concept of “Rapera” – a citizen who is not only mindful of his rights but also his responsibility and duty to the Nation. A Rapera, guided by the values of thinking and compassion understands that patriotism should be more than just a sentiment expressed during national events; it should be a commitment to building a better nation every day. True patriotism is about taking responsibility for the nation’s progress, being engaged in the issues that shape our future, and actively contributing to the well-being of our communities.

This also involves holding ourselves and each other accountable. Whether it’s preserving public spaces, practicing civic engagement, or volunteering, we all have roles to play. The small acts of individual responsibility that we demonstrate daily contribute to a culture of shared accountability, laying the groundwork for a resilient society.

Our journey as a nation will not be without challenges. Economic downturns, natural disasters, and social tensions are realities that we must be prepared to face. Building resilience means preparing ourselves to adapt and learn from hardships. A resilient society is one that can respond to adversity with strength, unity, and hope.

To foster resilience, we must nurture a culture that values continuous learning, empathy, and flexibility. Our resilience is rooted in our collective will to protect each other and persevere, even in times of difficulty. For this to happen, we must have a sense of belonging undistracted by irresponsible quarters. A future built on resilience is one where our shared values and purpose empower us to thrive, no matter what challenges lie ahead.

“Our Country, Our Future” is more than a vision; it’s a pledge. It reminds us that our actions today define the legacy we create for tomorrow.
