Don’t give up on cultivating a reading habit

I REFER to the letter “Think creatively to help the drive towards a high literacy nation” (The Star, April 24; online at bit.ly/star_creative).

Despite the best intentions of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in setting up the Book Kiosk Project to promote reading during the World Book Capital campaign in 2020, some of the kiosks were vandalised and books went missing, as the letter writer noted. The news saddened us but it is not a surprise. Call it apathy or perhaps it’s because some of us are not there yet in achieving First World civic- consciousness.
