TAN SRI Muhyiddin Yassin's resignation as the eighth prime minister is politically significant. It is the first time the Yang di-Pertuan Agong asked this of someone whom he opined did not have majority support in Parliament.

When Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stepped down as prime minister on Feb 24, 2020, Muhyiddin and his allies assembled at the Sheraton Hotel to form the Perikatan Nasional government. The King appointed Muhyiddin as prime minister, on the belief that he enjoyed the confidence of Parliament.
