YESTERDAY, July 11, was World Population Day. This year’s World Population Day falls on a milestone year, the year in which the Earth’s eighth billion human inhabitant is expected to be born. This is about 11 years after the global human population hit seven billion in October 2011.

In his message for this year's World Population Day, United Nations secretary-general Antonio Gutteres said:
