'First, do no harm' – an ethical principle more Malaysian doctors must remember

MOST people who go to a hospital to see a doctor have faith in the doctor’s assessments of their medical problems. They expect their doctors to possess a certain level of medical knowledge and be competent in their field.

What people certainly do not expect is for the doctor to fail to make a diagnosis or make an incorrect diagnosis. While I believe not all misdiagnoses are caused by negligence, a misdiagnosis is still very serious as it may mean that early treatment may be missed out on and, in some cases, permanent damage can be caused, or even death. There can be long-lasting consequences, decreased life expectancy, and prolonged pain and suffering.
