THE seizure on July 10 this year of a container of African elephant tusks, pangolin scales and other wildlife skulls and bones, estimated to be worth RM80mil (US$18mil), is Malaysia’s biggest to date.
While officials of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department deserve praise for their efforts in thwarting this attempted smuggling, it is also both worrisome and intriguing that seizures of illegal wildlife shipments have rarely resulted in any arrests despite investigations being conducted.
