Time for warning system on tropical storms


Storm warnings: A fishing trawler thrown onto the coastal road at Likas Bay, Kota Kinabalu, during tropical storm Greg, which hit Sabah on Dec 26, 1996. Although uncommon, tropical storms, including cyclones and typhoons, have occurred in Malaysia.

I REFER to the Malaysian Meteoro-logy Department’s (MetMalaysia) recent media statement regarding the weather alert issued by the United States Embassy in Malaysia on Sept 27.

Using the terms “Tropical Cyclone Season”, the alert warned US citizens in Malaysia that “the monsoon season is often accompanied by continuous rainstorms and flooding in some parts of the country, including Kuala Lumpur.
