Dealing with the refugee situation

THE Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) read with great interest the statement made by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that the government is considering entering into an agreement with the United Nations High Commis-sioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to manage the refugee situation in the country (“Govt mulls agreement with UNHCR to better manage refugees, asylum seekers, says Zahid”, The Star, May 8; online at bit.ly/star_system).

Abim believes the formulation of an agreement will resolve pertinent issues surrounding the management of refugees and asylum-seekers here, particularly by establishing high-level committees and taskforces between government agencies and the UNHCR.
