Stop the fuss over wearing the songkok

I WAS amused by the reactions of some politicians to the directive to wear the songkok for the legislative swearing-in ceremony in Penang. Some said that the directive is linked to a political movement that is rising in Penang.

When I was in the school band at St Xavier’s Institution, our uniform was a white tunic, white long pants, polished black shoes and our head gear was the songkok. We teenagers of all races then – and our parents – had no issues with wearing the songkok. We were very proud of our uniform. In fact, till today the SXI band continues the legacy of wearing the same uniform, and we Old Boys are proud of that.
