THE Nobel Prize award week is back again. This year, the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine was awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their work that enabled the development of mRNA vaccines against Covid-19.
No recent laureates have had the biggest immediate impact on our lives than Karikó and Weissman. In their citations, the Nobel Assembly states: “Through their ground-breaking findings, which have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, the laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.”
