Initiative a timely boost for the semiconductor industry

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last week launched the National Semi-conductor Strategy during his speech at the Semicon South-East Asia 2024 event. We believe this initiative will help to leapfrog the nation’s semiconductor industry to the top globally.

The electrical and electronics sector comprises about 7% of Malaysia’s GDP, with semiconductor devices and electronic integrated circuits alone making up a quarter of total exports, adding up to RM387bil in export value in 2022. Today, Malaysia is recognised as the world’s sixth- largest semiconductor exporter, commanding 13% of the global market for semiconductor packaging, assembly, and testing, and supplying 20% of the annual semiconductor imports of the United States.
