BATIK is a living heritage of our nation. It should be something to be proud of, and should be worn and accepted in daily and formal settings. Sadly, it has been relegated to be worn only on Thursdays in our august House (“PM jokingly reprimands Home Minister for wearing batik in Parliament”, The Star, July 2; online at bit.ly/star_batikuse).
Every time a Western band or singer hits town, some of our politicians sing the same tune: We are Asian and have our own unique Asian values and cultures. These entertainers with their presumed “liberal” lyrics on love, drugs, and sex are deemed an affront to our values and culture.
