DURING moments of economic hardship in the past, the Malay-sian government had encouraged the rakyat to venture into growing our own food in our gardens.

Under second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak, there was the Green Book Plan. And in the 1990s the Agriculture Ministry encouraged people to start hydroponic gardening and gave out equipment and seedlings. With the media – especially RTM – spreading the word, the effort was a resounding success.
