THE 2nd reading of the Infectious Disease Act 342 amendments saw a few changes. This Act, which started back in April 1989, saw some changes to deter and mitigate the transmission of infectious diseases, uphold authority to trained and empowered healthcare staff in managing and controlling infectious diseases, and protect the public’s health in cases of infectious disease transmission, most likely in the event of an outbreak (including epidemics and pandemics).

The changes are timely and robust. They uphold public health safety as paramount and empower the authority to enforce rules that deter disease transmission and prevent spread. These steps are necessary to prepare for the future, i.e., new pandemics on the horizon.
