FREEDOM of expression is not absolute or a standalone right. It must be read and understood in relation to other fundamental rights, among them the right to freedom of thought and conscience, right to information, and right to life, liberty and security of the people.
Thus, I think suggesting that social media platforms should not be regulated – or regulated to a minimal extent – because of concerns that regulation may impact the right to freedom of expression fundamentally mischaracterises the right and its interaction with other fundamental human rights.
