IN a few days, it will be the 67th anniversary of Malaya’s independence. Our joy is tempered by the trying economic times we are living in. Nevertheless, this is not an occasion to harp on our problems and failings. Instead, I wish to dwell on our many blessings as we commemorate 67 years of Merdeka.

I am inspired by Indian author Sanchita Pandey’s saying: “Never let the things you want make you forget the things you have.” Therefore, let me enumerate the unique features of Malaysian society that have helped us to thrive for 67 years as an independent and successful nation.
