Disparity in employment still a major issue

AS we celebrate the 67th anniversary of Merdeka, it is timely for us to reflect on the inclusivity of our economic prosperity, particularly concerning persons with disabilities (PWDs). True independence can only be celebrated when it empowers every citizen, including those with disabilities, to contribute actively and equally to the national economy.

Unfortunately, despite our progress towards a more inclusive society, the disparity in employment for PWDs remains significant. As of 2023 and as mentioned by the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF), while there are 637,537 registered PWDs in Malaysia, only about 12,000 are employed. This is less than 2% of this population.
