Persistent shortage in supply of local white rice


IT has been almost one year since I was able to buy local white rice from the supermarkets and hypermarkets where I usually shop for groceries.

I was thus baffled when I read that the average yield for the first padi planting season for 2024 at the Muda region in Kedah had increased from 4.86 tonnes per hectare in 2023 to 5.11 tonnes per hectare, “Rice yields up despite hot weather” (The Star, Aug 24).
