WHEN the former Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin came to office a year ago, among his first announcements was to propose the construction of a land-bridge across the Isthmus of Kra.

Such a bridge would facilitate the passage of trade across the Malay peninsula at its narrowest point at Kra, linking the Bay of Bengal with the Gulf of Thailand, and further afield, the Indian Ocean with the South China Sea.
