TEACHER appraisals in Malaysia are a crucial mechanism to evaluate educators’ performance and identify areas for improvement. However, concerns have been raised regarding the fairness of these appraisals, particularly in the awarding of excellence awards.
One significant issue is the tendency to reward teachers who excel in non-teaching duties over those who demonstrate exceptional teaching skills. Many teachers find themselves involved in a multitude of administrative tasks, such as attending meetings, preparing paperwork and participating in school events. While these duties are essential, they should not overshadow the primary responsibility of teaching.
