A REPORT published by Bank Negara Malaysia in 2018 said that for an individual to survive in the Klang Valley, he or she would need a “living wage” of RM2,700 a month. It has been six years since then, and it doesn’t need a rocket scientist to figure out that the amount would have been affected by inflation. In my view the current inflationary adjusted figure ought to be, conservatively, about RM3,000.
The national minimum wage is currently RM1,500, “uplifted” to RM1,700 next year, according to Budget 2025. Is our working class population paying the price for appeasing the employers’ lobby?
