Changing behaviours key to success of plastic ban

THE Selangor state government’s initiative to expand its plastic bag ban from just Saturdays to three days a week is a commendable step forward in combating plastic waste. It is an effort that aims not only to mitigate the problems caused by plastic pollution but also seeks to address the challenges ingrained in our collective behaviours that go against making sustainability a habit.

Addressing the challenges of ingrained behaviours and systemic inefficiencies requires collaborative solutions from both the government and the community, and the expansion of the plastic-free campaign is expected to build on the success of programmes like door-to-door recycling initiatives, which have demonstrated the potential of collective action.
