Tree of Life Inspired by hand-dyed Indian tapestry art from the National Palace Museum’s collection, Tree of Life shows the richness of life and the world’s prosperity. The six flames go up the tree, intertwined. The lanterns of seven colors at tree top symbolize seven different lives. They suggest the festival’s vigor and growth each year. A Hundred Flowers Inspired by the “hundred-flower” decorative graphic of the National Palace Museum, this gate features a divine tree reaching out its branches and the flowers of Chiayi such as scarlet sage, balloon flower, peony, and lily tree. Amid the golden branches and exquisite flowers are birds singing the songs of the spring. What a delightful New Year scene this is. A Hundred Trees The “trees within trees” make a whole forest here. The geometric art is accentuated by local fruits such as oranges, tomatoes and pears, suggesting that Chiayi is a fertile city. NG KOK LEONG/THE STAR

This year 2018 is the Year of the Dog on the Chinese zodiac. As loyalty is a trait of dogs, the main lantern at the Taiwan Lantern Festival this year is named "Loyal Auspiciousness." Its design depicts an indigenous child smiling, accompanied by his loyal Taiwanese dog, standing on Alishan looking at the mountain’s sea of clouds, a symbol of reflecting on the past, standing firmly in the present, and looking forward to the future. The message it sends is that we want the world to see Taiwan and we also welcome people from all over the world to visit Taiwan. The lantern has more than 20,000 sets of lighting circuit systems connected to it. We will use the high-efficiency full-color LED light sets to present the most beautiful and brilliant visual feast to festival visitors and the world! NG KOK LEONG/THE STAR
