Waste transfer stations in Selangor to undergo major disinfection following floods, says MB

WASTE transfer stations in Selangor will undergo a major clean-up after housing waste that was contributed by the major floods that hit the Klang Valley. Selangor Mentri Besar Amirudin Shari said clean-up work at 11 transfer stations in Selangor will start from Saturday (Jan 8) until about Jan 15. "We are also looking into using effective microorganisms (EM) to disinfect the area. "The waste that has been collected (from areas affected by floods) had been at the transfer stations for about 10 days and it left harmful bacteria that can contribute to diseases. "We believe that this EM can kill these bacteria and reduce the stench emitted from the waste," he said after the launch of the Selangor post-flood Bioremediation programme at Kampung Padang Jawa in Shah Alam. Amirudin added that Selangor has entered the second phase of post-flood clean up, where rehabilitation work for areas affected by the flood can commence. ''The state had spent RM12mil to clean up all the waste caused by the flood amounting to 79,000 tonnes. ''The state government will look at all suggestions it receives from various agencies as well as Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Izham Hashim to improve the state's flood mitigation," he said.
