Worldwide, millions of stateless people are trapped in a legal limbo. They are often deprived of the most basic rights, exposing them to exploitation, destitution and detention.
One of the reasons why it has been so difficult to tackle statelessness effectively is that there are simply too many different categories of stateless people.
Civil society and experts say the proposed citizenship amendments to the Constitution will worsen statelessness, and that other solutions remain available.
