Umar loses coach Simon to Singapore, but there could be a silver lining

I got your back: Umar Osman will not be left in a lurch following his coach’s move to Singapore. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star

AFTER Malaysia’s latest 400m revelation Umar Osman set a new national record (46.34s) en route to the SEA Games gold on his debut in Phnom Penh, his coach Simon Lau Chin Meng celebrated with him – and then started packing his bags.

The former soldier’s expertise in grooming young runners has been recognised elsewhere and he will take over as Singapore Sports School (SSS) athletics coach from June 1.
