Ziq takes it easy but still comes out on top

Haziq Junaidy, a 27-year old national athlete, came first place in the Powerman Short (aged 25-29 category) at the Powerman Malaysia Duathlon 2022 inn Putrajaya.

PETALING JAYA: National duathlon athlete Ziq Junaidy (pic) topped the Powerman Short event in the 17th Powerman Malaysia Duathlon at Dataran Putrajaya yesterday.

Ziq triumphed in the competition which features a 5km run, 30km bike ride and 5km run in a time of 1’26:30.

The Philippines’ Carl Gutierrez and Thailand’s Thawatchai Aemaot finished second and third in 1’30:44 and 1’34:39 respectively.

Ziq was pleased with the result as he did not push himself 100%.

“I didn’t want to go all out in this race because I will also compete in the Ironman race in Langkawi next week.

“There is also a national selection in three weeks time for the SEA Games in Cambodia next year,” said the 27-year-old Ziq.

Malaysia’s Tahira Najmunisaa Mohd Zaid won the Powerman Classic run, which is double the distance of the Short category, in 3’14:08.

The mother of four, who garnered a SEA Games silver in duathlon in May, finished ahead of Singapore’s Su Xin Hui (3’29:41) and compatriot Chong Hui Xin (3’38:33).

“It was a good race for me. Even though I had crashed my bike during the race, I still finished strong,” said Tahira.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Matt Smith topped the Male Elite category with a time of 2’40:58.
