Indie shuttler Daren first local to book spot in second round of Malaysian Open


KUALA LUMPUR: Independent men's singles shuttler Liew Daren was the first homester to book his spot in the second round of the Malaysian Open at the Axiata Arena on Tuesday (Jan 10).

Despite carrying a calf injury, world No. 31 Daren showed great determination and fighting spirit to topple world No. 23 Toma Junior of France 21-15, 14-21, 21-17 in 59 minutes.

The 35-year-old will likely go up against world No.1 and hot favourite Viktor Axelsen of Denmark next.

Axelsen will play compatriot Rasmus Gemke in a later opening round match.
