KUALA LUMPUR: Only two Malaysian pairs - Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei - are left standing to shoulder the challenge in the Malaysian Open.

World No. 7 Yew Sin-Ee Yi came from behind to beat Taiwan's world No. 15 Lu Ching-yao-Yang Po-han 17-21, 21-13, 21-14 in the men's doubles second round at the Axiata Arena on Thursday (Jan 12)

The independent home pair will take on Indonesia's world No. 1 Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto for a place in the semi-finals.

Newly formed pair Tang Jie-Ee Wei brought cheers for the home fans when they stunned Indonesia's world No.12 Rehan Naufal-Lisa Ayu with a 21-19, 21-16 win.

They have a tough task next against Thailand's 2021 world champions Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai.

Meanwhile, reigning men's doubles world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were shown the door after suffering a disappointing 10-21, 21-23 defeat at the hands of China's world No. 6 Liu Yuchen-Ou Xuanyi.

Malaysia's challenge also ended in the men's and women's singles when Ng Tze Yong and Goh Jin Wei lost out in their respective second round matches.

World No. 25 Tze Yong went down fighting 21-15, 19-21, 15-21 to Japan's world No. 7 Kodai Naraoka while Jin Wei fell 10-21, 12-21 to South Korea's An Se-young.

Independent player Liew Daren had conceded a walkover to Denmark's world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen after failing to recover from a calf injury.
