Badminton: Tze Yong, Yew Sin-Ee Yi storm into second round of All-England


PETALING JAYA: National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong (pic) and men's doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi smashed their way into the second round of the All-England in Birmingham late Wednesday (March 14).

Tournament debutant and world No 28 Tze Yong stunned Indonesia's world No 26 Shesar Hiren 21-9, 21-12 in just 36 minutes.

He has an uphill battle next though, as he is likely to face Denmark's defending champion and world No 1 Viktor Axelsen.

Meanwhile, Yew Sin-Ee Yi rose to the occasion to topple Taiwan's reigning Olympic champions Lee Yang-Wang Chi-lin 12-21, 21-16, 21-18.

World No 8 Yew Sin-Ee Yi have a tricky task in the second round against Indonesia's defending champions Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana.

In the mixed doubles, independent pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing also made it into the second round after edging Indonesia's Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas 21-19, 21-18.

Kian Meng-Pei Jing will face Japan's Yuki Kaneko-Misaki Matsutomo for a place in the last eight.
