It’s joy tinged with a bit of pain for doubles shuttler Aaron

PETALING JAYA: It was a day of mixed fortunes for national doubles shuttler Aaron Tai Wei Qin in the National Under-21 Championships.

The 17-year-old Aaron and his partner, Kang Khai Xing, were in their element in the men’s doubles as they defeated Muazzam Danish Hanafi-Mohd Zulhairi Sahimi 24-22, 21-17 in the quarter-finals before outplaying Lye Jun Yew-Mohd Zul Aqil Mohd Ridzuan 21-15, 21-17 in the semi-finals yesterday.

However, he suffered a disappointment in the mixed doubles when he and Lai Ting Cen were forced to concede a walkover to Mohd Amrin Faris-Loh Zhi Wei in the quarter-finals.

Both Aaron-Ting Cen entered the tournament with lower back injuries and they did well enough to reach the quarter-finals until Ting Cen could not stand the pain during the match and decided to retire.

“It was quite unfortunate that Ting Cen and I had to retire from the match (against Amrin-Zhi Wei), but to look on the bright side, it is not a bad decision because I’m also competing with a lower back injury,’’ said Aaron.

Aaron-Khai Xing face Anson Cheong Yan Feng-Samuel Lee in the final at the Perak Badminton Academy in Ipoh today. n QUARTER-FINALS
