Identical Cheng twins’ contrasting qualities will serve them well on court

Twin terror: Cheng Su Hui (left) and Su Yin hope to come good in their first SEA Games.

THE Cheng twin shuttlers, Su Hui and Su Yin, look identical but are different in some ways too.

And the duo will bank on their contrasting strengths to make it a remarkable first SEA Games outing.

Su Hui and Su Yin will play in the women’s doubles, while Su Yin will also play in the mixed doubles with team captain Choong Hon Jian.

The team competition starts tomorrow at the Morodok Techno badminton hall in Phnom Penh, followed by the individual events on Friday.

The 20-year-old Su Hui, who was born five minutes after Su Yin, said there was a strong bond between them.

“Many people think we have everything in common but we do have different characters,” said Su Hui.

“I tend to get angry easily while my sister is always calm even when the situation is tough.

“That’s the good part, as she always brings this positive attitude and calms me down when I get mad or if I’m stuck in some problems.

“So, in the game of badminton, she gives me great support and is a great partner.”

On court, though, both display strong physical attributes.

“Maybe, we look tough because both of us love to play extreme games. If we are not playing badminton, you can see us at Sunway Lagoon, trying out some extreme stunts,” she said.

“Our combination has gotten better but we are still doing some catching up with our seniors.

Su Hui-Su Yin are ranked 86th in the world and those ahead of them are Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah (11) and Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien (19).

“Our world ranking shows how far we are but we aim to catch up,” she said.

The duo, who train under former international Lee Meng Yean, are hoping to win a medal.

“This is the biggest tournament for us, so naturally, we are excited.

‘‘It will be awesome if we can win a medal in this competitive field,” added Su Hui, who knows that players from Thailand and Indonesia are the favourites.
