Yogendran takes over as new women’s coach

PETALING JAYA: Former international K. Yogendran (pic) will be the new national women’s singles coach.

Yogendran will swap places with James Chua, said national singles coaching director Wong Choong Hann.

James, who is currently on a three-week leave, will join Hendrawan and Datuk Tey Seu Bock in the men’s singles department starting June.

The former Malaysian Open winner James, who joined Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) last year, ended his stint as coach with the women’s singles before the SEA Games in Cambodia.

“It’s an internal swap. We decided on this before the SEA Games. We’ve reviewed the situation and for now, we believe this resignation will work best for us,” said Choong Hann, who is Suzhou, China for the Sudirman Cup.

Yogendran joined Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) last November and his task now is to whip up a strong women’s singles team after their weak performances at the SEA Games, which ended yesterday.

The women’s team fared poorly by losing to the Philippines in the quarter-finals.

It will be a tough task for Yogendran but the hope is on him to turn these players – K. Letshanaa, Siti Nurshuhaini Azman and Tan Zhing Yi, Wong Ling Ching and Ong Xin Yee into future champions.
