Tat Meng wants to help Zii Jia achieve Olympic dream

KUALA LUMPUR: Wong Tat Meng was presented with an opportunity to help Malaysia win the elusive Olympics gold in Paris next year and this led him to accept the offer to coach independent shuttler Lee Zii Jia.

Tat Meng, 55, believes Zii Jia is a good prospect to win the men’s singles gold in Paris and he wants to help the world No. 10 achieve his Olympic dream.

“The offer to coach Zii Jia is a chance to help Malaysia win its first Olympic gold medal. I believe Zii Jia is a good prospect,” said Tat Meng.

Tat Meng, who is currently the coach of Hong Kong’s men’s singles squad, confirmed that he received the offer two weeks ago.

Prior to his role in Hong Kong, Tat Meng coached in Indonesia (2011-2013), in Scotland (2017-2018) and in South Korea (2019-2021) where current women’s singles world No. 2 An Se Young was one of his proteges.

He also served as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) singles coach from 2003-2011 and for the second time from 2013-2016 before exploring opportunities away from Malaysia.
