Launch of GLY Badminton Hall in Melaka holds special meaning for Liu Ying

Keeping busy: Goh Liu Ying launched her own badminton hall named after her initials – GLY Badminton Hall – in Krubong, Melaka.

PETALING JAYA: Former national mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying continues to keep herself busy after retirement by launching a badminton hall named after her initials – GLY Badminton Hall – in Krubong, Melaka.

For Liu Ying, establishing a badminton hall in Melaka holds a special meaning because it is her hometown, where she grew up and began her sports journey.

She does not only want to remind herself of her original intention but also hopes to bring more resources in the sport to her birthplace.

“Most of my post-retirement plans revolve around badminton because it is what I love the most,” said Liu Ying, who won a silver medal with Chan Peng Soon at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“I had thought about running a badminton hall before but it was just an idea.

“During my pregnancy, I had the time and opportunity to plan and execute this project with friends who shared a similar vision.”

GLY Badminton Hall and GLY Badminton Academy have joined forces to provide opportunities for local residents to learn badminton.

“I hope to help more badminton enthusiasts and those aspiring to become national players through the badminton hall and academy,” said Liu Ying.

Seven courts will be available for rental. Liu Ying retired in January before announcing her marriage and pregnancy in April.
