Grandma Zhang vows to return to court as soon as heel heals

PETALING JAYA: Injuries continue to be women’s singles shuttler Zhang Beiwen’s (pic) Achilles’ heel.

The world No. 14 had to withdraw from her home tournament, the US Open starting today in Iowa, due to leg injury.

She had to skip it after aggravating her right Achilles injury in the Canada Open last week and suffered an abdomen cramp in the semi-finals.

Beiwen ruptured her left Achilles on the biggest stage of her career at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and spent seven months recovering before making an emotional comeback at the All-England in March.

Beiwen, who is fondly known as ‘Grandma’ among the badminton fraternity, was disappointed that she could not compete in her home tournament but has vowed to return to the court as soon as possible.

“Grandma (Beiwen) had to withdraw, but don’t worry, I will be back!” posted the 32-year-old Beiwen on social media.

“Unfortunately, I hurt my right Achilles during my first match, and it has gotten worse with each match I’ve played, but it’s not as bad as when I tore my left one,” said Beiwen.

“I appreciate everyone who has reached out to me and I apologise to all of my fans who have been cheering me on.

“I promise Grandma will get back on the court ASAP (as soon as possible)!”
