Lucas saves Malaysia the blushes with title

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Lucas Lee was the saving grace for Malaysia as he bagged the boys’ singles title at the Jaya Raya Junior International Grand Prix in South Tengerang, Jawa.

The unseeded Lucas defeated third seed Thanik Foo of Thailand 21-10, 21-19 to secure the boys’ Under-15 title.

Lucas had also outplayed another Thai shuttler, second seed Punnatat Prempunpong, 9-21, 21-13, 21-14 in the last four.

Meanwhile, Malaysia had aimed to making amends in the Under-19 event after their failure in the Asian Junior Championships two weeks ago, but it ended in disappointment.

Girls’ singles Ong Xin Yee found the going tough against Japan’s Sora Ishioka and suffered a 21-8, 21-13 defeat in the final.

In the boys’ doubles, Mohd Faiq Haziq-Lok Hong Quan also could not match Indonesians Darren Aurelius-Titis Maulida and lost 19-21, 22-20, 21-17.

Zaki Ubaidillah of Indonesia won the Under-19 boys’ singles after beating Wu Zhe-ying of Taiwan 21-16, 21-18.

National No. 1 Eogene Ewe who lost in the second round of the Asian Junior Championships, also did not fare well as he was shown the exit in the quarter-finals by Zhe-ying (21-14, 11-21, 21-14).
