PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi will have an opportunity to redeem themselves in the Asian Games in Hangzhou next month after a forgettable outing at the World Championships.
The independent men’s doubles pair suffered a shock 15-21, 10-21 defeat at the hands of eventual finalists and homesters Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in the third round in Copenhagen.
It was Yew Sin-Ee Yi’s fourth straight early round loss in individual events after also suffering the same fate in the Korean, Japan and Australian Opens.
Ee Yi was despondent after the defeat but vowed to do better in future tournaments.
“We gave everything we had but we could not get a good result,” said Ee Yi, who had captured a bronze medal with Yew Sin in the 2021 World Championships in Huelva, Spain.
“We know that there were higher expectations on us and we are disappointed that we could not deliver more.
“But this is not the end for us and we will come back stronger.
Yew Sin said: “We can’t afford to feel down for too long.
“We need to keep trusting ourselves and work on improving after this.”
Yew Sin-Ee Yi will be looking to turn around their fortunes at the Asiad where they have been selected for both the individual and team events along with national No. 1 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik.
The former will be competing in their second Asiad after the 2018 edition in Jakarta where they reached the quarter-finals.
This time, Yew Sin-Ee Yi can take heart from their good showing at the Asian Championships in Dubai in April where they came close to capturing the title before going down fighting 21-16, 17-21, 19-21 to India’s world No. 2 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in a thrilling final.
The pair had stunned Indonesia’s world No. 1 Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto and Japan’s 2021 world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi en-route to the final.
Yew Sin-Ee Yi are certainly capable of producing a similar showing in the Asiad.
