PETALING JAYA: Indonesia have reshuffled the national doubles coaching department in a bid to improve the shuttlers’ performances ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Men’s doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, who is known fondly as Herry IP and has been coaching the likes of world No. 1 Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto, has been switched to the mixed doubles department and will replace Pelatnas Cipayung.
Herry’s former assistant Aryono Miranat has been promoted as the men’s doubles head coach.
“Herry has been officially switched to the mixed doubles department and will take up the position as head coach,” confirmed the Indonesian National Badminton Association (PBSI) via social media.
“He has agreed to the change of department and will guide the likes of Rehan Naufal-Lisa Ayu.
“Meanwhile, Aryono Miranat will take over the post of men’s doubles head coach and will be assisted by Thomas Indratjaja.
“We hope the changes will bring a positive impact to our shuttlers and improve their performances ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“We hope our players will be able to qualify and continue our proud tradition of winning medals at the Olympics.”
Indonesia have won at least one medal in every edition of the Olympics since badminton was first held in 1992 in Barcelona, except in the 2012 London Games.
The reshuffle comes in the wake of the Indonesian men’s and mixed doubles pairs’ disappointing performances in the World Championships last month.
None of the pairs managed to win a medal.
The best performers were veterans and world No. 10 Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan and world No. 13 Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana, who made it to the quarter-finals.
It was three-time former champions Ahsan-Hendra’s last world meet.
Fajar-Rian were a letdown after suffering a shock defeat to Taiwan’s world No. 20 Lee Jhe-huei-Yang Po-hsuan in the second round.
Meanwhile, none of the mixed doubles pairs even made it to the last eight.
The top three pairs Indonesia – world No. 14 Rehan-Lisa, Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas (No. 16) and Dejan Ferdinansyah-Emmanuelle Widjaja (No. 17) – all went out in the third round.
