Roy King-Valeree’s bid to reach final in Indonesia hits a snag in last four

PETALING JAYA: Yap Roy King-Valeree Siow’s bid to reach their first international tournament final of the year was foiled after the mixed doubles pair went down in the last four of the Indonesian International Challenge.

The reigning mixed doubles national champions lost 21-23, 16-21 to Thailand’s Weeraphat Phakjarung-Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn in Medan yesterday.

World No. 66 Roy King-Valeree fought hard in the first game but the Thai pair held their nerves to win narrowly.

Buoyed by the win, Weeraphat-Ornnicha controlled the second game well to deny Roy King-Valeree.

The latter had also lost in the semi-finals in their last international outing — the Nantes International Challenge in France in June.

Earlier, Roy King and Valeree had seen their campaigns in the men’s and women’s doubles along with Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Go Pei Kee respectively end in the second round.

Roy King-Arif went down fighting 18-21, 21-19, 15-21 to top seeds and home favourites Sabar Karyaman-Moh Reza while Valeree-Pei Kee also narrowly lost 26-24, 17-21, 19-21 to second seeded homesters Jesita Putri-Febi Setianingrum.

Malaysia’s challenge in the tournament came to an end after men’s doubles pair Beh Chun Meng-Goh Boon Zhe fell 19-21, 16-21 to Sabar-Moh Reza in the semi-final.

The shuttlers will next turn their attention to the Indonesian Masters, which starts on Tuesday at the same venue.
