Little margin for error as Jit Thye braces for tough final

PETALING JAYA: Para shuttler Chew Jit Thye will be out to avoid another disappointment after checking into the final of the Indonesian Open.

Yesterday, Jit Thye and his partner, Chung Hong Tsin fought hard to beat Martyn Ford-Grant Manzoney of the United States 20-22, 21-10, 21-19 in a thrilling semi-final of the WH1-WH2 category (wheelchair-severe impairment, wheelchair-minor impairment) in Solo yesterday.

A greater challenge awaits Jit Thye-Hong Tsin as they will face Indonesia’s Supriadi Supriadi-Agung Widodo, who secured an easy 21-5, 21-9 win over India’s Poorna Rao Chapara-Manjunatha Chikkaiah in another semi-final match.

It will be a tough match because they lost 23-21, 7-21, 8-21 to the Indonesian pair in the group stage on Thursday.

Jit Thye, however, is not losing his head and wants to learn from his mistakes.

“We stole a game before losing in the group match but they were better. We have to avoid making the same mistakes,” said the SEA Games doubles bronze medallist, who was born with spina bifida, a condition caused by incomplete spinal development in the womb.

“In the semis, we made a lot of simple mistakes by sending the shuttle out and also committed service errors.

“We can’t afford to do that against the Indonesians. Both of them are fast ... Supriadi is deceptive with his shots while Agung is good with his net shots and smashes, so we need to be really patient.

“Each team have an equal chance of winning the gold medal, but it depends on our form during the match.

“We will try our best to win and enjoy the game.”

Winning the doubles title will be an icing on the cake for Jit Thye, who defended the men’s singles WH1 (wheelchair-sever impairment) title on Friday.

Last year, Jit Thye and Hong Tsin settled for a silver in the doubles event in Yogjakarta.
