Bigger test awaits Roy King-Valeree after winning Indonesian Masters

PETALING JAYA: Perseverance finally paid off for Yap Roy King-Valeree Siow after winning their first international title this year at the Indonesian Masters in Medan yesterday.

Roy King-Valeree defeated Hiroki Nishi-Akari Sato of Japan 13-21, 21-14, 21-14 in 47 minutes to earn their fourth career title.

The duo had only resumed their combination in December last year after a successful year in 2021 where they won three titles in a row.

It has not been easy for the young pair as Roy King has been on a double duty, as he had also been partnering Wan Arif Wan Junaidi in the men’s doubles since March, but he had not shirked his responsibilities in the mixed doubles.

National mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto said Roy King and Valeree have started getting the feel of playing at the international stage and deserved their victory.

“Roy King-Valeree are slowly but surely becoming a consistent pair.

“This is their first title (this year) and it shows that they have the quality to become a better pair,” said Nova.

“Valeree is also getting used to the mixed doubles tactics and she is showing steady progress.

“For the time being, let them continue playing in two events as they are still young and have the energy to last in both events.

“We will keep monitoring their progress to see which event they are better at before coming to a conclusion later but for now, they will continue playing in both events.”

Roy King-Valeree will play in the qualifying rounds of the Hong Kong Open where they will play Yeung Shing-choi-Fang Ka-yan of Hong Kong in the qualifying rounds when the tournament begins tomorrow.

In the doubles, Roy King-Arif will play Joshua Magee-Paul Reynolds of Ireland in the qualifiers.

Valeree, who partners Go Pei Kee in the women’s doubles, did not make the cut for the Hong Kong Open but they will continue playing in the International Challenge and super 100 events to improve their current ranking No. 96.
