PETALING JAYA: It was a day when several back-up shuttlers scored a first in the Malaysian International series.

Loo Bing Kun-Cheng Su Yin captured their maiden title after beating India’s Satish Kumar-Aadya Variyath 21-18, 21-14 in the mixed doubles final in Sabah yesterday.

It was sweet revenge for the duo after losing to the Indians in the final of the Maldives International Series in August.

It was a timely breakthrough for the 22-year-old Bing Kun and Su Yin, 20, who had only been paired together in June.

Su Yin, who has been playing in the women’s doubles in senior competitions with her twin sister Su Hui, has won a silver with Yap Roy King in the mixed doubles at the Cambodia SEA Games in May.

On her victory with Bing Kun, Su Yin said: “I’m very happy to win my first title with Bing Kun. We had met our objective in this tournament and hopefully there is more to come from us.”

There was also joy for men’s doubles pair Fazriq Razif and Wong Vin Sean who captured their first senior international crown after they upstaged teammates Chia Weijie-Liew Xun 21-14, 21-16 in the final.

“I’m happy and proud to win this title,” said Fazriq. “So far, Vin Sean and I are progressing quite well and this win makes us eager to do even better.” Men’s singles: Ikhsan Leonardo (Ina) bt Krishna Adi (Ina) 21-14, 21-18.
