Uptempo tunes help Shaqeem to be on song

PETALING JAYA: Shaqeem Eiman Shahyar (pic) has definitely got the beat.

The national men’s singles shuttler loves listening to uptempo songs before stepping onto the court.

It is part of his pre-game routine which he says elevates his energy levels, ensuring that he is pumped up and ready to take on his opponents.

“There are a few things that I will do before my matches ... firstly, I will analyse my opponent’s game,” said the 22-year-old Shaqeem.

“The others are like getting enough rest and a thorough warm-up.

“However, the most important thing for me is putting on the headphones and listening to fast-paced music as it gets the adrenaline going.

“The song selection can be random as long as they have an upbeat tempo.”

Yesterday, the ritual worked wonders for the world No. 139 as he delivered his A-game to secure a 21-16, 21-15 win over compatriot and world No. 310 Eogene Ewe in the second round of the Malaysian International Challenge at the Arena Badminton Perak in Ipoh.

Shaqeem had earlier kicked off his campaign by defeating Aaron Kok Kai Bin 21-11, 21-12 on Tuesday.

“I’m quite pleased with my performances thus far but my mental strength needs some work,” said Shaqeem.

“I entered this competition without many expectations as I just want to focus on my game. I just want to enjoy and play without too much pressure.”

Shaqeem, the 13th seed, will next face world No. 266 Mohd Taufik Mohd Atef Haikal, who defeated Chia Jeng Hon 18-21, 23-21, 21-18 in the third round today.

Although ranked higher, Shaqeem remains cautious.

“It will not be easy as Taufik defeated my teammate (Jeng Hon) who is a tough player,” added Shaqeem.

But for now, the headphones are back on as Shaqeem looks to maintain his good rhythm.
