Unfit Tze Yong likely to miss European tourneys

Men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong's Paris Olympics dream could be dashed by his back injury.

PETALING JAYA: Men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong will likely miss the upcoming European tournaments starting from the German Open from Feb 27-Mar 3 in Mulheim.

It was learned that the 23-year-old is still being hampered by the lower back injury he picked up in the Malaysian Open last month.

Tze Yong made his competitive return in the Asia Team Championships recently but only played against minnows Brunei in the group stages before he was forced to retire in the quarter-finals against Singapore's Jason Teh.

The world No. 15's chances of competing in the back-to-back French Open (March 5-10) in Paris and All-England (March 12-17) in Birmingham now also hang by a thread.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will issue an update soon on Tze Yong's participation in the European competitions.

If it is confirmed that he cannot compete in the tournaments, it will be a huge blow to Tze Yong's chances of qualifying for the Paris Olympics in July.

Tze Yong needs to maintain his ranking in the top 16 before the qualifying period ends in April or face missing the boat to Paris.
