China capture Asian Junior mixed team title, pay touching tribute to fallen comrade

PETALING JAYA: China successfully defended the Asian Junior badminton mixed team title after beating South Korea 3-1 in the final.

The Chinese team paid a touching tribute to men's singles shuttler Zhang Zhijie, who sadly collapsed and died during the group stage match against Japan.

In a touching tribute, the team held up Zhijie's jersey during the medal ceremony in Yogyakarta on Tuesday (July 2).

Men's doubles pair Hu Keyuan-Lin Xiangyi had given the Chinese a perfect start by ousting Lee Hyeong-woo-Lee Jong-min 21-14, 21-19 in the opening match.

Kim Min-sun, though, gave Korea hope by coming out on top over Xu Wenjing 21-7, 19-21, 21-14 in the women's singles.

Wang Zijun, who replaced his fallen comrade Zhijie, stepped up magnificently to double China's advantage with a commanding 21-13, 21-8 victory over Lee Sun-jin.

Women's doubles pair Chen Fanshutian and Liu Jia-yue then gave the team the winning point by defeating Kim Min-ji-Yeon Seo-yeon 21-16, 22-20.
