Missing out on world juniors medal fires up Xin Yee at Malaysia Super 100

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Ong Xin Yee is keen to make amends for missing out on an individual medal in the World Junior Championships recently in Nanchang, China.

Xin Yee was left disappointed when she lost in the girls’ doubles quarter finals with her partner Carmen Ting to younger teammates Low Zi Yu and Dania Sofea Zaidi 11-21, 16-21.

The disheartening defeat made Xin Yee reflect deeply over why she did not win a medal but she acknowledged the effort of the youngsters who took home the silver.

“I was sad that I did not bring back a medal for my country when I was defeated in the game by my juniors. But at least they won a medal for Malaysia,” said Xin Yee.

“It was just not my day at the court. I played my best but it was not good enough in the quarter finals. So losing the medal was pretty devastating for me.”

What made it even more disappointing for Xin Yee was that she and Carmen had won bronze in the Asian Junior Championships in Yogyakarta in July and were medal prospects in Nanchang.

Now, she hopes to improve by staying focused on the game and avoiding simple mistakes.

And Xin Yee is striving for a better performance in the Malaysia Super 100 competition at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara, which started yesterday.

The 18-year-old is competing in both the women’s singles and doubles in the tournament.

For the first qualifying round, she beat Mexican Cristina Perez 21-15, 21-15.

In the second qualifying round, Xin Yee defeated fellow Malaysian Sarah Ngu 21-10, 21-11 to make it to the main draw.

“For the qualifying rounds in the Malaysia Super 100, it was a platform for me to show my best form and secure a spot in the main draw,” said Xin Yee.

“Although I won the match, I did find the Mexican player to be a tough opponent. But I am glad I gave it a good shot,” she added.

“I made some silly mistakes today. But the moment I found my flow in the second set, that was when everything started falling into place,” said the 17-year-old.

Xin Yee will take on another Malaysian Siti Nurshuhaini Azman in the first round today.

In the women’s doubles, Xin Yee and Carmen will play Taiwan’s Huang Zih-ling-Wang Szu-min in the opening round.
