Arif-Roy King trailing in ranking but have potential to move up


ODENSE: Men doubles shuttlers Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King are expected to pip seniors Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi in the world ranking if their performances at the Denmark Open is used as a yardstick.

The world No. 31 Arif-Roy King did better than the pros by reaching the second round at the Jyske Bank Arena.

On Wednesday, Arif-Roy King defeated Kevin Lee-Ty Alexander Lindeman of Canada 21-16, 21-11 to set up a meeting against second seeds Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark but world No. 20 Yew Sin-Ee Yi lost 18-21, 8-21 to England’s Ben Lane-Sean Vendy in the opener.

Arif-Roy King are currently the sixth best Malaysia pair behind Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (4th), Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (8th), Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (15th) and Choong Hon Jian-Mohd Haikal Nazri (18th) and Yew Sin-Ee Yi.

Arif said they were trailing in the pecking order but are ready to move their way up.

“Roy King and I have some catching up to do as the men’s doubles is quite competitive in Malaysia.

“It’s good but we hope to move up a bit,” said Arif.

“It will be great if we can end the year by reaching the top 20.”
